Experimenting with coloured flash

After taking a lot of inspiration from one of my contacts on Flickr who goes by the name of Lost America, I decided to try out his style of shooting on my guitar in my room this evening, and it came out better than expected.

Coloured Gibson

Not so bad?

On the weekend I bought a number of different coloured "mini-folders" from WHSmith which are half-transparent. Therefore the flash or torch (whichever I decide to use) comes through with those colours. It took a while to get it looking half decent, but its definitely something to explore. The shot above was using my Speedlite 430EX flash (handheld of course) with green, red and purple "filters" (well, folders!)

PS: Lost America also has a website, take a look…

Good old WHSmith… It might be worth buying some proper gels and putting them over higher powered lights if you can get them. Also try defusing the light, use baking paper stuff over a light, it can create a nice soft effect, good for people photos etc…

Mm, indeed. I may well buy some proper gels soon. Never thought of using baking paper before, but yes, that’ll work nicely I think. I have an Omni-bounce diffuser for portraiture already which works wonders.

I have shit-loads of gels if you want a little bit.
