After littrally just last night upgrading my WordPress version to 2.0.7, I now find they’ve released version 2.1 "Ella". The features of the new version are just great, but its a tad annoying to keep upgrading to new versions every few days. There’s been 3 versions this month so far, but at least the WordPress community is active.
With the new version, an unbelievable 550 bug fixes have been supported, along with a brand new version of Akismet which is bundled with the package. A couple of features which really interested me, from the features list of the new version…
- Autosave makes sure you never lose a post again.
- You can set any “page” to be the front page of your site, and put the latest posts somewhere else, making it much easier to use WordPress as a content management system.
The last one in particular. A friend of mine who I set-up with WordPress a while back wanted to do this, but I knew it would mean a complete theme rewrite so we scrapped the idea. Hopefully now he can do it from his wp-admin.
Thanks again WordPress – although new version upgrades are annoying, at least you’re keeping us all up to date.
Mate, have you updated this site yet? Are you using ultimate tag warrior? UTW needs a slight change to the php to stop it killing things on the blog.
I haven’t upgraded to 2.1 yet as the WP team will still support and update the 2.0x release for the next few months.
Have a look at the .org support forum and see how many people are having issues with the upgrade. Most of these are either user stupidity or not understanding the new systems but some are a little worrying. Theme designers having to re-design theme as tags and hooks have changed etc.
While the Devs have been hard at work, the limited extra functionality that Ella gives just doesn’t warrant me updating yet.
BTW, static pages are easily achievable in 2.0x with a simple static page plugin. I have done a fairly simple WP based site for the Pancake Eating Freaks that’s a custom theme and was good fun!
Thanks for the update. I may just wait a while until they iron out the bugs then. From listening to what you said above, I half-expect another version number any time now then!
I’m happily running 2.0.7 at the moment
