Canon’s new beast – Canon 1d MkIII revealed

You may remember a while ago that I read and was speculating over Canon’s possible new camera to its 1d range, with a rumoured 22 mega pixels? Well it turns out its "only" got 10.1 mega pixels, the same as my camera, the Canon 400d.

What’s more impressive though, is its ability to fire away at 10 frames per second. Yep, 10fps! That’s over double its predecessor, the Canon 1d MkII which is capable of just 4fps. Not only that, but it can do this for a whopping 10 seconds, taking of course about 110 photos in that time. Seriously outstanding!

As you’d expect, their new camera features a self-cleaning sensor as also found on the Canon 400d, and its 16% lighter than its previous version. It also includes a staggering amount of 16 auto-focus sensors and a further staggering 26 focus assist points!

Just wow. But at a snip over three grand, I won’t be buying one any time soon (ever). Read more from the Photography Blog and Canon’s UK website and a really really big page on the Northlight Images website.

    you seem to be confused.

the 1d mkii does 8 fps and i seriously doubt it has the same sensor as your 400d.

what will be interesting is if the 1ds mkiii does show up with 22 megapixels. you did realize there is more than one 1d right?

From the Canon website, the Canon 1d MkII does 4fps – canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_F...

And the Canon 1d MkIII has 10.1 mega pixels. As per the website again – canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_F...

Not the same sensor, but the same mega pixel count. Of course, the 400d is a 1.6x crop sensor, whereas the 1d range all use full frame.

Good site, but I too must correct a few things you mentioned. The 1DmkII does indeed shoot 8 fps – you can switch it for shooting either one shot, low, or high – low is 4 fps and high is 8 fps. I know, I own one. All 1D bodies are not full frame. the 1D models have a 1.3 crop factor. The 1Ds bodies have full frame (I own a 1Ds and a 1DsmkII also – both have a full frame sensor). The 1DsmkII only shoots 4 fps (16.7mp). Excited about the 1DmkIII I am on reserve for one. I hope it is as good as the white sheet makes it sound.

Hi Jeff, thanks for the corrected info! You’re very lucky to own such awesome cameras. Let me know what the MkIII is like when you’ve got it! :)

  8. Jeff says:

Thanks Daze. It was only three years ago I started with a Sony F717 – went to a borrowed Rebel, and was then loaned a 10D until I could buy my first 1D body. I am sure the mkIII will be good, I am holdng my breath though… new technology always makes me a bit nervous until the bugs are worked out.. Where I am lucky is that there are only two Canon Servioce centers in the United States. One of them is just a 10 minute drive from my studio. That’s luck! :-)
