The photo above is usually regarded throughout Mini-fans as porn. What you’re looking at is my soon-to-be new gearbox for my new engine, which is straight cut. Also known as a straight cut close ratio gearbox, or SCCR. This is quite special in many ways, let me just explain why this is commonly known as Mini-porn…
- Straight cut gears always make that classic screaming sound, as heard from many rally and race cars.
- This is not only straight cut, but close ratio too which increases acceleration speeds massively.
- Less power and torque is lost through the gearbox because of the straight cut gears.
- They are usually very expensive.
- Like, really really expensive…
- This one wasn’t.
That’s pretty much it.
I already have straight cut drop gears, which also make a mega-loud screaming noise, but apart from the noise they don’t achieve much in regards to performance. This, on the other hand, does.
I’ll be sending the gearbox off to a known gearbox re-builder shortly for him to check-over and replace parts as necessary. As well as that, I’m also going to get a Central Oil Pick-up installed, and an X-Pin Diff. Both of these are designed to withstand a lot more force and power put through them, hopefully more than enough to withstand the new power from my engine.

Re-reading my post. Its sort of sad why people call straight cut box’s porn, isn’t it? Ah well, I’m happy either way!
This is like another language to me!
Hehe, cool. There’s probably a bunch more posts coming soon which will be even more in-depth. I can’t find much information out on the internet about specific things like this, so I’m trying to go real in-depth with a few subjects like this to help other people.
How much top end are you going to lose by fitting this?
I mean, the close ratio means that you’ve got less power time in each gear.
What’s the final drive ratio?
Not sure on the final drive ratio yet, and not sure on the top end speed. Anything above 80mph is fine with me, but I suspect I’ll be able to push just about 100 from her at Castle Combe
Hello, Nice gearbow. I have the same for my MG Midget MK 1. It need to be rebuilt too. Do you know where I can buy all parts necessary to work on it, I’m living in France and I think it’s better to ask an English specialist
Many thanks in advance
Hi!
Thanks for the comment. I am going to be using a guy who goes by the name of Guess Works to rebuild my gearbox who is based in the UK. His website is http://www.guess-works.com and he’s very reasonably priced too.
Other than that, I would recommend the Mini Spares centre for gearbox parts. They’re site is http://www.minispares.com and I believe they ship outside of the UK.
Best of luck!
Hi there
I’m very glad when I write my message to you, Basically I’m student at Brunel University (postgraduate) Automotive engineering and design motor sport 2008 – 2009,so we have engine R6 Yamaha (SAE) FORMULA as you know my section is drive train for it. Actually I need to improve it, because that my project. So can you help me about that? For example do you have a books or sites for how can I build drive train and how can I modify that to get a good performance? .I hope to understand me because I want to apply to my supervisor all information ? If you have any question please ask me without hesitate because I don’t have time. (Sorry for say that)
Hi,
Unfortunately, I don’t know much about bikes, or to be fair, gearboxes in general. I understand a small amount when it comes to Mini / A-series gearboxes, but beyond that is beyond me!
Sorry I can’t help further. Best of luck & thanks for the comment anyway!
