Wiring up auxiliary spot lights with relay

As per my post the other day about wiring up spot lamps on my car, well, I did it!

I have yet to mount them on the front of my car, but I’ve got all the wiring installed and they work perfectly. Before I begin writing what I’ve done, let me just list a few things which I have got.

  • 100 watt Maxtel long range driving lights
  • 30 amp spot light relay from Lucas (in Portsmouth)
  • Lots of 35 amp wire (from Maplin)

I will draw up a diagram to go along with this post shortly, but in the mean time I will bullet list what I’ve done.

  • Permanent 12v feed from Battery to relay post “##”
  • Feed from main beam loom to switch on dash board
  • Wire from switch on dashboard to relay post “##”
  • Ground (using car bodywork) on relay post “##”
  • Wires split into two from relay post “##” to driving lights

And hey presto, everything worked perfectly! I haven’t ground the negative wire from the spots properly yet, but that’s easy enough to do whenever I get some more time on my hands. The way I’ve wired this up will work in such that the driving lights will only work when I either flash or engage main beam, but while doing that I am also able to control whether they are used or not. Meaning, I can use the flasher and/or main beam with or without the spot lamps, if I wish! Awesome!

I hope this sheds some light to some people (ha, get it? Light?…)
