Changed rear brake cylinders…

With regards to my post a few weeks back about my brakes and the bias to the rear wheels

I received a pair of rear brake cylinders from Minispares with the model number GWC1102 and I’ve fitted them (along with a great deal of fun with seized up adjusters on my backplate). I bled my brakes loads this time and I used a one-man bleed kit with me just making sure all is OK, and I didn’t undo and do-up the bleed nipples each time.

Anyway, what I’m saying is that my brakes are infact very good now and the rears do NOT lock up before the front now! I’m not sure why this was only discovered after fitting new rear wheel cylinders, but I found a huge amount of air in the front system. So something to bear in mind if you find you have problems is that bleeding the brakes REALLY well, will almost certainly help a load! Put it this way, I used up half a litre of brake fluid…

Although brakes are not perfect (yet) since I think I have yet more air in the system, but I am still planning on fitting the bias valve at some point, in which case I will need to bleed them again anyway.

Another thing I’ve found is that my 1983 Austin Mini City E has metric unions connecting from the master cylinder to the pressure regulator valve, when I originally thought they were 3/8th UNF. If you’re Mini is made in the 80′s, from experience it is best to check what unions you have before you buy stuff! Finally another quick note is that my rear wheel cylinder unions are NOT metric and are infact 3/8th UNF. Stuuupid Austin, why can’t they just make all the unions the same!
