Gdrive – the future of data storage?

Many of you have probably already heard of such Gmail hacks called Gdrive, or Google Drive, but I thought this was something that Google didn’t really like you doing, however after reading two awesome articles on the Zdnet blogs, I think we could be entering a new world in data storage…

After reading both articles, the author has done a lot of research and come to the conclusion that Google owns gdrive.com and gbrowser.com. At first you may not think that is anything to get excited about, but then again why else would they own those two domains? There is aparently also speculation that Google’s Gdrive will offer unlimited data storage, meaning you could share your music, photo’s, bookmarks, emails, documents with anyone else in the world, instantly.

Let me think aloud for a moment then, if this is the case, then would it not be possible for your own photo’s to be bought and printed online via Google’s own printing service such as TruPrint and the like. How about editing documents online then? What you mean like Writely.com, now owned by Google. Bookmarks & emails are already handled by Gmail.com anyway, so they are almost there! What about Google Music then? Take a read of this article, and notice the first search result on a Google search for “Google Music“, weird huh?

Personally? I can’t wait, I would be more than happier to share all of my information, photo’s & data with Google and their server’s, so long as they are nice and fast and offer me something that is better than what I currently already have.

Anyways, take a read of these two articles: Gdrive not a rumor and this one. Interesting stuff…

Update: More interesting reads found at TechCrunch, Google Drive & Microsoft’s Live Drive?

That has to cause problems, sharing everything online isn’t ment to be that easy, DRM & even personal privacy. I’ve never been a fan of gmail myself, tried for a week then went back to outlook.

A google browser would be intresting… but Google is a company, they exsist to make money, I can’t see them having a browser without ads of some sort.

As for google.com/musicsearch I somewhat suspect that’s moer of an iTunes or a Napster for finding and buying songs rather than a free-for-all with a gdrive… But the internet is litterally growing so with the advent of Vista and more interactive, 3D, virtual content who knows where we’ll end up.

Oh, looks like I should have read your links first… “Google is preparing to launch a music downloading service, according to research firm Caris & Company.”

Mmm indeed! Na I wasn’t saying it would be a free-for-all, but indeed an iTunes/Napster alternative, but maybe one in which music is not really “downloaded” more as just bought, and put on your Gdrive – instantly. Would this mean streaming music all the time to play your own songs? I’d be OK with that so long as its good quality & fast. I guess that would also mean an online CD burner, now we’re really talking.

As for the Google Browser, I am not sure about this one. I have read many blogs which talk about this and they can never come to a conclusion in “why”, but then again, why not? Also, maybe its more than just a ‘net browser, more like a file browser for Gdrive?…

    OMG Imense.

I think this could be the next generation of music / web / downloading / streaming all rolled in.

Google are almighty and with this sort of thing coming so quickly after things like GMail and with Maps bearly being public for a year – It makes you wonder what else Google has up their sleeve.

    I’m Excited – Aren’t You?

Yeh it should be awesome, as with most Google products so far. I am just a bit curious how they are going to make it nice and fast. I mean, most of the photo’s I take with my camera (being 8mp) are at least 1.5mb each, and if I want to keep all high-res images (which I do) then uploading would take a bit of time, even if you’re on 1mb/2mb broadband!

Maybe Google will be the first non-business ISP to release 1mb up/down speeds. We can only wish!

Besides that question, everything else Google has made seems to be going in the right direction, and so long as user’s are OK with the privacy (I am), then it should be a giant leap in the history of computers & the internet. I am excited indeed :)

Well, NTL is gonna be next to give us 1meg up, the 10mb service will have it soon i thinks.

Google can do it! they have 100,000 servers.

  7. Adcuz says:

BTW, writeley is actually quite good, i got an email with an invite asking me to join, i tried it, not bad.

  8. Daze says:

NTL’s 10mb service I thought was going to be 768kb up? And yes, writely is an incredible bit of kit!

  9. I don’t know the reason for this big news about GDrive. Even if google did come out with gdrive, I doubt if they can compete with services like IBackup (http://www.ibackup.com) who have such a depth in features and performance. Google has been successful in search and mail, but has failed in most other ventures. Specialists rule!

Well, SDSL is the same download as upload hense, symetrical digital subscriber line, you could get that, so google cant be the first to provide 1 meg upload as it allready exists, and more upload than that is available. you can find out if your local exchange is sdsl enabled.

it will cost you a bomb.

[...] As a follow up to my post about Google’s Gdrive and their generally future ideas about Google and what they could achive, I would like to point out the error / 404 page when typing in Google Music on a search is infact a search feature of Google. If using Google.com (rather than .co.uk) and type in a band or group name, Google will show you an option to show “More music results for…” and upon clicking gives us detailed information about the band’s albums, reviews, and places to buy them (via Froogle feeds). Take a look for yourself on my Franz Ferdinand Google Music search example for ya. [...]
