Google Image Labeler

Google Image Labeller was mentioned on Radio 1 today at work and I’ve just had a quick play. Seems pretty fun. Basically, its a fun quick game for everyone, but for Google, its a way of labelling images in their database to improve the quality of the Google Image search.

It works by pairing you up with some other random person also wishing to play the game, in real time. You both get shown an image, and then both try and guess what label best suits the image shown. Once both players have said the same label once, its a pass, you get 100 points, and the game will continue to the next random image.

I’ve had a quick go and my best so far in the 90 seconds allowed was 700 points. Not bad, and quite fun too. Of course, your score depends greatly on how good your partner is too.

Its an interesting thing to note that by playing this game, Google is recording all labels entered for every image shown, and if 2 players pick the same label, then maybe its a confirmed match for that image. I wonder how long it will take for this information to be used in their image search? I am soon expecting a "Try these alternative searches: " list of tags across the top of an image search very soon, what do you think?
