A few members from the Mini club decided a while ago to organize an evening of bowling down one of the local bowling alleys, on a Sunday, before the Mini club which starts at 8pm. Collin organized a day for it back last year and it was planned for last Sunday – we had a great time!
I wanted to try and grab as many good shots from the evening as possible. Not only to display the photos later on the Mini club website, but to give my camera, skills and knowledge a bit of a challenge. I knew it would be difficult, and it was especially difficult to bounce the flash since the roof was dark and non-reflective. It was also too dark not to use a flash.
This was one of the first photos I took of the evening and I think this came out really well. The flash bounced OK on the ceiling, but it was angled too up-right, as Collin pointed out, so therefore the floor and ceiling in the foreground is lit-up, rather than Keith. Although I think this gives a nice lighting angle, I think it works.
I won’t go on too much since I took quite a few photos, but I noticed Mike almost certainly had the most elegant and "correct" swing out of everyone so I wanted to try and capture this with my camera.
This shot took a few attempts to get right, but this one works. Keith named Mike, "Mike the Strike – The Fareham Ninja" from the evening! His technique was quite professional! I also got this unique, funky shot thanks to Mike’s precise bowling skills.
The above shot was taken with a slow shutter speed and a flash. The shutter I used was 1/4th second to get the movement of all the neon lights throughout the bowling complex, but also used the flash to highlight Mike and to freeze the action at the same time.
Finally, Collin borrowed my camera for a while to have a play around. The photo below is what he took, although I have processed it a little in Photoshop.
Another unique photo here, an excellent shot Collin.

I think my favourite is the one of Mike with the movement. Came up good. I wasn’t sure about it when I looked at it in the camera.
Glad you liked the “lane” shot. I’m quite impressed with the result. Tweking in PS is nothing unusual, what did you do to it?
Yep, I really like that “Mike” shot.
With your photo, I played with levels a bit, sharpened and then unsharp mask. The pattern came up really well with an unsharp mask. Not sure if anyone’s taken a shot like that before? Now we need a light-up bowling ball for some light movement!!
Sweet. I don’t know if anyone else has done that shot either, but, probably!
Levels and unsharp mask is what I do to nearly every shot I take!
