At last I finally got time to go up the famous Spinnaker tower. Many people I know despise the thing for costing too much money, and being five years late until it opened, but I have always admired it. Its a masterpiece in modern engineering and design and looks absolutely stunning, from both in and outside!
Costing a little over £5 per person to get in, its a bargain to be honest. After queuing for the best part of 20 minutes (I don’t mind that) we got the internal lift up to the 1st level. There is an outside glass lift, but that wasn’t working. The lift travels at 4 meters per second and takes just 70 seconds to get to the 1st level.
Once the list opened, the view could be seen and WOW. I know what was to expect – a high-rise view like that of an aeroplane or any tall building, but this view is something else. You can apparently see up to a 23 mile radius, it truly is fantastic.
The other great thing is that you are free to stay up there as long as you wish. So get this – you pay £5 per person, and stay up there as long as you want. That can’t be bad value for money, can it? The other great thing is the glass floor. The glass floor is 4 or 5 panes of glass in the floor which you are free to walk (or crawl!) across, which you can see down to the ground.
I didn’t fancy having a go – so I didn’t. It is pretty scary!
So there you go. If you’re in the Portsmouth, Southsea or Gunwharf area and have nothing to do for an hour or so, then why not visit the Spinnaker tower. For the money, its hard to beat. It’s certainly cheaper than the cinema. It’s open weekdays until 5.30pm and Friday/Saturdays until 10pm. 10pm? That’s at night, long time exposure’s here I come! – watch this space!
I took a fair few photos, so check them all out, go on!
